At the end of last year I sold back my sweet diesel VW TDI Sportwagen to Volkswagen after the company was sued for lying about emissions on their diesel cars.

The day of the buyback, I leased a diesel BMW 328d which [according to what I’ve read] emits water from its tailpipe and is super clean.

It was the first time I’d ever leased a car.

I went through the sales process at the dealership in Berkeley with relative ease… until I arrived at financial services, where I suddenly found myself seated across from a woman with rings on every finger and a sweet smelling perfume I loved.

Raquel and I had a few things in common. We were both born in 1968 and had been in major car accidents that left our low backs and pelvic floor requiring lifelong loving care.

She walked me through the financial details of the lease agreement and then we arrived at the traditional upselling part of the meeting.

There were a few insurance plans that would protect me from having to pay out money for any damages incurred on the car during my three year lease agreement.

Raquel shared her horrific experiences of leasing a Mercedes and how much she was now having to pay out as a result.

She advised me on many things like if I wore designer jeans, the ink might seep out onto the car seats and stain them, thus holding me responsible to repair that…. and other little things.

I thought she was seriously overreacting to what could happen [and yeah, that was part of her job right to sell me on extra stuff right?]

After considering the insurance plans, I chose the one that would not hold me responsible if I scratched, dented, stained and did other things to the car while it was in my possession.

After all, it can get very expensive to fix and replace these items on a BMW and I enjoy living with imperfections.

Cut to present time.

I already have an ink stain on the passenger seat, a small bump in the windshield from a tiny rock that hit it and a few small scratches in the rims.

Raquel was right and I’m happy I got the extra protection plan.

I invested in the extra care and now I can rest easy into the everyday joys of driving a luxury car that feels safe and nurturing every time I secure my seatbelt.

That got me thinking about all the choices you have when it comes time to investing in the redesign of your clinic, medical space, wellness business or single treatment room and the risks you take.

Are you more on the conservative side, buying less furniture that will last longer and endure wear and tear like my new BMW, minus a few scratches and dings or do you take a bigger risk, buy something less expensive that you know won’t last as long but fits within your current budget now?

There is no right or wrong answer.

The most important piece of creating a patient-centered design in your work space is that your peeps keep coming back to enjoy it over and over again.

The repetition of experiencing a cozy, nurturing and uplifting wellness space is what helps build your business.
